I don't blame voters - Ekurhuleni mayor

2016-08-26 09:56
Mzwandile Masina (Daily Sun)

Johannesburg – Incoming Ekurhuleni Mayor Mzwandile Masina says reports that he blamed voters for the ANC's poor showing in some of the country's metros in the municipal elections were not a true account of what he said, but rather, analysis by journalists.

"The allegation of me blaming voters is not true, my statement was made public. I was just reminding people of history, you can't re-write it, if you are making insinuations as a journalist say 'this is my analysis', not mine," Masina said in an interview on Thursday.

Delivering his inaugural speech on Tuesday, Masina said ANC members had forgotten those who fought for their liberation.

"They reduced our glorious movement, the African National Congress, to a shadow of its former self."

He was referring to voters in the metros of Tshwane, Johannesburg and Nelson Mandela Bay, which the ANC lost control over after the August 3 local government elections.

In an interview with Power FM this week, Masina said the media worked with opposition parties before and during the elections to paint the ANC as corrupt.

"My issue is that everyone says the ANC is corrupt. I don't agree with that, I have to be frank. I have never been charged with corruption or [been] found guilty of corruption, but the narrative that we are arrogant and corrupt you always find in mainstream media," Masina said.

He resigned as the deputy trade and industry minister prior to his election as mayor, the Presidency said in a statement.

He was expected to announce his mayoral committee on Tuesday.
