Mbombela - IT billionaire Robert Gumede has donated 12 brand new vehicles including 4x4s and mini-buses to the African National Congress (ANC) in Mpumalanga.

The tycoon surprised the provincial ANC structure with the delivery of the fleet at their offices in Mbombela on Monday.

"We show great appreciation to the positive gesture by Robert Gumede. We will be using these vehicles for a lot of work that will be done by the ANC as well as the moving around and sourcing during the election season," said ANC provincial spokesperson Thulare Madileng on Tuesday.

The donation has seen many ANC supporters sharing photos of the vehicles in appreciation of Gumede's work.

The billionaire also donated millions to the ANC in the province.

This is not the first time that he has dug deep in his pocket to support Premier David Mabuza's administration.

No political ambitions

In 2013 he stated that although he gave money to the ANC, he did not do so in order to earn special favours.

"What you must know is that this ANC is our ANC, it doesn't belong to one person; it belongs to you, you and you. I donate millions to the ANC and I don't say I want a tender [for that]. I give money because I was giving when Oliver Tambo was president; I was giving when Dr Nelson Mandela was president; I was giving when Thabo Mbeki was president and I'm giving while Zuma is president," said Gumede, during his much publicised 50th birthday bash in Mbombela, where US R&B singer Keith Sweat and rapper Rick Ross were among the performers.

The billionaire also indicated that he had no personal political ambitions.

"If you dream it you can achieve it; if you keep following your goals nothing will stop you. You do not need to be a son or a cousin of a politician to make it in life. You want to be able to speak your mind.

"Most in Mpumalanga think I want to be an MEC. Do you think I'm MEC material? Others say I want to be premier. Do you think I'm premier material? Do you think I aspire to be a president? What I'm interested in is to see development of our people and infrastructure," said Gumede.

The billionaire added that there were people who want him to use his personal money to build houses when the government has the duty to do so.

"We must understand that democracy come(s) with responsibilities. I have heard some people say I must use my money to build poor people houses. Let me tell you; my business makes almost R12 billion a year and in that, almost 50% goes towards tax. You must understand that that is the money they pay politicians to serve you and me," said Gumede.

In 2014, he also threw himself a birthday bash and invited 10 000 rural children.
