Durban - A KwaZulu-Natal mayor on Monday denounced political attacks in the province and called for "social co-existence".

"We have noted with great dismay the recent attacks against political representatives in various parts of our province," KwaDukuza Mayor Ricardo Mthembu said, according to a statement from his office.

Mthembu prayed for peaceful elections at an event organised by the African National Congress-led KwaDukuza municipality and the KwaDukuza Evangelistic Ministers Forum in support of unity, political tolerance, and social co-existence.

Mthembu said the recent murders of councillor candidates and ANC members reminded residents of violence during other elections. Thirteen people, 12 of them ANC members, had been killed during preparations for Wednesday’s elections.

A political activist was shot dead at a voting station in Lindelani during the 2014 general elections.

Mthembu said it was time to stand up and unite against such killings.

"We are calling all political parties to unite in one resolve against violent intimidations and political killings, as all parties are generally to the same end," he said.

He urged parties contesting Wednesday’s elections to adhere to the Electoral Code of Conduct and show tolerance for others.

The ANC in KwaZulu-Natal has called on the provincial government to establish a commission of inquiry into politically-motivated murders.
