Cape Town - Today is the last day for political parties and
independent candidates to submit their candidate nominations for the 2016 local
The submissions close at 17:00 on Thursday.
And so far, over 30 000 candidates had been nominated.
Electoral Commission (IEC) spokesperson Kate Bapela said nominations
may be submitted by hand at local IEC offices for the municipality where
candidates would be contesting elections.

As of Monday morning, a total of 28 448 ward and PR
candidate nominations had been submitted online, she said.
A further 2 077 nominations had been submitted manually.
In the last municipal elections in 2011, 53 757 candidates
contested, including 754 independent candidates.
This week, political parties have been hard on the campaign
trail, each putting forward their candidate lists as the best.
On Tuesday, African National Congress secretary general
Gwede Mantashe lauded the party’s selection process as proof of their goal for
a non-sexist society.
Economic Freedom Fighters leader Julius Malema said their
candidates would be those who worked hard for the community.
They would be selected based on their work ethic and the
party was aiming for the same number of men and women on their lists, he said.
Democratic Alliance leader Mmusi Maimane on Wednesday said his
party would be contesting all wards in the country, and detailed the list of
their mayoral candidates.
