What are the 2016 Municipal Elections?

Cape Town - South Africa will hold its municipal elections in 2016.

The country has three types of elections, namely national, provincial and municipal (or local government) elections.

The municipal elections are different to provincial and national elections. They are held every five years to elect councillors who are part of a municipal council.

A municipal council governs the town, city, metropolitan or district council, and works to ensure that services such as water, refuse, electricity and sanitation, are delivered and accessible to all.

South Africa currently has eight metropolitan municipalities, 44 district municipalities and 207 local municipalities.

Meanwhile, in provincial elections (held on the same day as national elections), you vote for members of the provincial legislature. Provincial government makes and carries out laws and policies that affect the province only.

In national elections, you vote for a political party, not individuals. These political parties make up what is known as Parliament. Each political party gets a share of seats in Parliament in direct proportion to the number of votes it receives in the election. National government makes and carries out laws and policies for the whole country.

The municipal elections will take place on August 3.
