Los Angeles - Mohamed al Fayed has sued US network CBS for emotional distress and invasion of privacy over the pictures it showed last week of Princess Diana as she lay dying following her fatal 1997 car crash.
Al Fayed is the father of Dodi al Fayed, who was Diana's boyfriend and was also killed in the Paris crash. Al Fayed, who owns the London department store Harrods, has claimed that the crash was engineered by the British royal family which was embarrassed over the relationship between the Princess and his son.
According to news reports on Wednesday, Al Fayed was considering expanding the lawsuit to include defamation, because the CBS show 48 Hours Investigates also dismissed the conspiracy theories touted by him.
The programme sparked widespread criticism for showing for the first time the grainy black and white photographs shot by paparazzi just minutes after the crash.
It also revealed exclusive details from the French police investigation into the incident.
CBS said it believed the lawsuit was "meritless and we intend to vigorously defend ourselves". - Sapa-dpa
