London - British rock star Pete Doherty was released from custody on a legal technicality on Tuesday after being charged with breaching his bail conditions in relation to previous drugs charges.
The 28-year-old Babyshambles front-man was detained in east London at about 02:00 on Monday after police stopped the car in which he was travelling. He was arrested on suspicion of possession of drugs.
But the charge was dropped as he was not produced before West London Magistrates Court within 24 hours, prosecutor Anjulika Vatish said.
"The court has no jurisdiction to deal with this matter any more," she said, adding that the singer had been freed.
'Clean up act or face jail'
Doherty was warned by a judge at the same court on August 7 that he had to clean up his act or face jail after he appeared on a separate charge of driving illegally while possessing crack cocaine, heroin, ketamine and cannabis.
The dishevelled singer, whose battle with drug addiction and on-off relationship with supermodel Kate Moss make more headlines than his music, admitted the charges and sentencing was adjourned until next month.
