London - Singer Pete Doherty has been charged with seven counts of possessing drugs, a spokesperson for London's Metropolitan Police told AFP on Thursday.
The frontman for the band Babyshambles was charged with five counts of possession of cocaine and diamorphine, or heroin, listed in Britain as Class A, or hard, drugs, and two counts of possessing cannabis, a Class C drug in Britain.
Doherty, who will appear in the Thames magistrates' court in London, has rarely been out of the headlines in recent months, due to his well-documented addiction to hard drugs, having been arrested three times since April.
The maximum penalty for possessing a Class A drug in Britain is six months if the case is tried in a magistrates' court, and seven years if it is tried in a Crown Court.
For possession of a Class C drug, the maximum penalty is three months if the case is tried in a magistrates' court.
Doherty was in the news recently when it was claimed in the British press that he was to marry former girlfriend and supermodel Kate Moss, a claim that was later denied by Moss's friends.
