Pietermaritzburg - Kwaito star Mzekezeke allegedly lost his temper and he and his backing singers assaulted a man who unmasked him minutes before he got up on stage at the Easter concert at the Royal Showgrounds in Pietermaritzburg on Sunday.
When he got up on to the stage he announced that a person sent by witches had come to unmask him, and that he could not tolerate that.
Since Mzekezeke started his career as a musician he has never taken his mask off on stage.
Attempts by Natal Witness to interview Mzekezeke were not successful, as his spokesperson's cellphone was switched off after the show.
People who witnessed the brawl backstage allege that the man snatched Mzekezeke's mask and threw it a distance away to expose his identity.
"The man was badly beaten up by his gang and he had to run for his life. The security personnel were nowhere to be seen during the incident," said a witness.
After the show Mzekezeke and his backing singers left the venue unnoticed and without signing autographs in contrast to popular gospel singer Rebecca Malope, who was the concert's main drawcard.
Two weeks ago Mzekezeke won the Best Selling Album Award and Song of the Year Award for S'Guqa Ngamadolo at the South African Music Awards at Sun City.
