Cape Town - Charlize Theron earned further praise on Wednesday when the National Council of Provinces (NCOP) acknowledged her coup at the Oscars earlier this week.
NNP MP Adriaan van Niekerk told the NCOP that while South Africa was recognised worldwide through people like golfer Ernie Els, Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu, the country now had its very own Hollywood star.
"She like our other icons will serve as an inspiration to people. This council salutes her."
Theron won an Oscar for her portrayal of Aileen Wuornos, a prostitute and serial killer.
She had to undergo a robust make-over and pile on nearly 14kg of weight to give the character the credibility it required in the movie aptly named Monster.
Theron is the first South African to win the title of Best Actress.
