Los Angeles - Harry Potter and
the Order of the Phoenix whisked its way to No 1 at movie box offices with weekend ticket sales of $77.4m and a
five-day total of just over $140m, according to studio
estimates on Sunday.
The fifth in the series of films based on JK Rowling's
novel about the British boy wizard, sold more tickets in its
first five days than previous Potter movies, said Dan
Fellman, chief of domestic film distribution at Warner Bros, a
unit of Time Warner Inc.
Daniel Radcliffe, who stars as Harry Potter, recently said the newest film was darker than the previous four, presenting him with a new acting challenge.
"They're more challenging but that's what makes them more exciting for me as an actor," Radcliffe said.
"That's a lot more fun to do than just the action side of things."
