Dakar - Grammy-winning singer Youssou N'Dour says that Africans must warn other Africans about malaria and should take the lead in combating the disease.

The Senegalese star says that while Western countries and organisations have contributed greatly to the fight against the mosquito-borne disease, it is now time for Africans to take the lead.

He spoke on Wednesday at his club in Dakar as he hosted the finale of a national song contest modeled on American Idol.

The winner of the contest will record a song with N'Dour and join him in teaching other Senegalese about the dangers of and the best way to prevent malaria.

Malaria causes one out of every five childhood deaths in Africa.
