Budapest - An arrest warrant has been issued against Ayman al-Zawahri,
considered a top associate of Osama bin Laden, the prime suspect
behind the US terror attacks, Interpol said on Tuesday.
Al-Zawahri was "a leader of the al-Jihad terrorist group and
emerging as one of the key figures in Osama bin Laden's al-Quaeda
terrorist network," said a statement released at an Interpol
conference in Budapest.
The arrest warrant - described as a "red notice" high-priority
warrant - was issued following a "request from Egyptian police
authorities," said the statement.
A week-long Interpol assembly in Budapest has been dominated by
debate on fighting terrorism after the deadly September 11 strikes
on the New York World Trade Centre and the Pentagon that killed
nearly 7 000 people.
On Tuesday the international crime-fighting organisation vowed
to wage a non-stop, round-the-clock battle against terrorism
following the US attacks.
"Interpol will never be the same again," Interpol
Secretary-General Ronald Noble said. "We will never again turn out
the lights and close the doors at Interpol Headquarters," he said. - AFP
