Paris - Hollywood hunk Tom Cruise said he proposed to girlfriend Katie Holmes early on Friday at the Eiffel Tower.
Speaking at a Paris news conference alongside Holmes, Cruise said, "Yes, I proposed to her ... it was early this morning at the Eiffel Tower, so I haven't slept at all."
The couple often shared smiles as Cruise turned to look at her, with a massive diamond ring on her finger.
"Today is a magnificent day for me, I'm engaged to a magnificent woman," Cruise said.
Asked why he chose the famed Paris landmark, he said: "I've never been to the Eiffel Tower. It's Paris, it's a beautiful city, it's very romantic."
Cruise, 42, was in Paris to promote the French release of the Steven Spielberg film War of the Worlds.
Holmes, who grew up with a poster of Cruise on her bedroom wall, has recently graced magazine and tabloid pages in her new role as the star's girlfriend.
The former star of television's Dawson's Creek acknowledged during a recent press conference to mark the launch of the new Batman film that she used to dream of marrying the actor.
"We all keep dreaming, and luckily, dreams come true," she said.
Holmes, 26, has been on the record about her relationship with Cruise, 42, since the end of April.
Cruise recently split from actress Penelope Cruz and Holmes and actor Chris Klein called off their long-standing engagement.
Before dating Cruz, Cruise was married to Academy Award winner Nicole Kidman for 10 years.
