London - Illusionist David Blaine has been asked to pay for the cost of policing his attempt to live without food for 44 days in a glass box dangling near Tower Bridge, police said on Friday.
Two TV companies which have coverage rights have agreed to pay the bill.
The Metropolitan Police said the numbers of people coming to see - and hurl abuse at - Blaine had escalated to the point where more policing was needed.
"We have now asked asked the organisers to pay for it as it is having a considerable effect on the people of Southwark," the district on the south bank of the Thames where Blaine is suspended, Commissioner John Stevens said in a statement. "It is important to say there has been considerable expense.
"We are also considering the public order implications. What's taking place at Tower Bridge currently is an example of how these things can escalate."
People have thrown eggs, golf balls and insults at the 30-year-old New Yorker in hopes of provoking a reaction. Others have bared their breasts or buttocks or banged drums to keep him awake at night.
One man has been charged with threatening behavior and criminal damage after allegedly trying to cut off Blaine's water supply.
