London - British rock band Coldplay
headed the list of nominations on Monday for the respected Ivor
Novello music awards after being selected in three categories.
Soldier-turned-singer James Blunt also featured highly after
being shortlisted for two awards, which honour the best British
songwriters and composers.
For best song, Coldplay's Fix You goes up against
Suddenly I see by Scottish singer KT Tunstall and I Bet You
Look Good On The Dancefloor by Sheffield rockers the Arctic
Monkeys, who stormed to prominence earlier this year.
Speed of Sound, which won Coldplay a best single at
February's Brit awards, is nominated in the most performed work
and international hit of the year categories, with Blunt's
You're Beautiful also nominated for both gongs.
The Gorillaz, Kaiser Chiefs and Athlete were nominated for
best contemporary song, while Robbie Williams (international hit
of the year) and Natalie Imbruglia (most performed work) were
also shortlisted.
David Ferguson, head of the British Academy of Composers and
Songwriters, said it was important to acknowledge performers'
talents when more music was being stolen and becoming
"increasingly ubiquitous in modern life".
"It is critical to honour and reward the people who write
and initiate the music we all enjoy," he said.
The winners of the 51st Ivor Novello awards will be
announced at a ceremony in London on May 25.
