Venice, Italy - Johnny Depp, the pirate king of the US box office this summer, said Thursday he had no idea why his film "Pirates of the Caribbean" has been so successful.
"I have no idea how or why it was received so well by so many people. I was and still am very very shocked," he told journalists at the Venice film festival, where he stars in Robert Rodriguez's Once Upon a Time in Mexico.
Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl has been a summer smash in the United States, raking in more than $70 million in the first week of its release in July.
It gave Depp, star of Sleepy Hollow and Edward Scissorhands to name but two films, the biggest hit of his career.
The huge success of the pirate movie left the idol at a loss for words.
"That's something that hasn't happened a lot to me. I've very, very touched by it, and yeah, very moved by it," he said.
"I think the thing to do is to enjoy the ride while you're on it."
