Phnom Penh - Hollywood actress Angelina Jolie has upset the cultural
sensitivities of Cambodians by starring in a movie that is being
shot in northern Thailand.
Jolie, who recently adopted a Cambodian orphan, is starring in
Beyond Borders, a love story about a volunteer doctor who worked
in refugee camps in Africa and Cambodia during the 1980s.
However, the filming of Cambodian scenes are not being shot in Cambodia prompting a warning from the Cambodian culture ministry that people
won't be fooled into believing the Thai backdrop is actually
Cambodia.
"Once the film comes out, if it shows a bad image about
Cambodia, then there will be a reaction from the government and it
can be banned from this country," Som Sokun, director of the
culture ministry's film department, said.
"But there are some similarities in geography between the two
countries and perhaps it was easier for them to film in Thailand,"
he added.
