New York - Indian-born director Shekhar Kapur is to take over an unfinished project written by British filmmaker Anthony Minghella shortly before his death last week, Kapur said.
"Two days before Anthony Minghella went in for an operation on a tumor they had just discovered, Anthony called me to see if I would direct a short he had written," Kapur said on his website.
"I will direct the film now - with Anthony in my heart and in presence of his soul," added Kapur, whose previous works include Elizabeth and Elizabeth: The Golden Age.
Shooting for the project, New York, I Love You, a series of short love stories based in the city, was due to have begun in Manhattan next month, according to the Hollywood Reporter.
Other movie heavyweights involved in the project include Hollywood stars Scarlett Johansson and Natalie Portman, Indian-born director Mira Nair and Brett Ratner, director of the Rush Hour series.
Minghella, best known for the Oscar-winning 1996 film The English Patient, died last week at the age of 54.
The writer and director's other box office hits include The Talented Mr Ripley and Cold Mountain.
