Nicosia - Inspired by Australian pop diva Kylie Minogue's cancer scare a group of British expatriate cancer campaigners in Cyprus are vying to beat Singapore's world record for the longest bra chain in a bid to raise awareness.
The current record stands at 79 000 bras, that's 60 kilometres strap to strap and the Cyprus team is targeting 90 000, to make a chain 68.3 kilometres long.
"We want to create breast cancer awareness by getting the whole of Cyprus to give a pound and a bra," organiser Gina Ghillyer said.
"There are 300 cases of breast cancer every year which is a large number for Cyprus and a cause for concern," she added.
Women across the Mediterranean holiday island are being urged to empty out their bottom drawers and hand over any unwanted lingerie for the cause.
The bid to be placed in the Guinness Book of World Records will take at least 10 months to organise.
Apart from raising awareness and much needed cash for cancer support and counselling, organisers hope they may be able to establish a database for women to "nudge" them towards regular screenings.
"There's no effective recall system here and we would like to ask women if they wouldn't mind being reminded for re-checks," said Ghillyer.
Pop singer Kylie Minogue's recent breast cancer diagnosis has helped raise global awareness about the effectiveness of timely medical checks.
"Cancer won't kill you but negligence will," is the slogan for the awareness campaign.
