Miami - US rapper Marion "Suge" Knight, who is no stranger to prison and gang violence, was shot in the buttocks early on Sunday as he attended one of the glamour parties ahead of MTV's video music awards ceremony, police said.
The incident occurred at the Shore Club in Miami Beach just before 01:00, during a party hosted by Grammy award-winning hip hop artist Kanye West, but details were under investigation.
"He was shot in the buttocks," said Miami Beach police officer Pamela Ellett.
She said Knight had been taken to Mount Sinai Hospital and was being treated there.
The hospital declined to provide any information about the patient's condition but local reports indicated the wound was not life-threatening.
Death Row
Knight is the founder of Death Row Records, one of the leading labels for rap musicians.
He was last jailed in 2003 and spent seven months behind bars for violating parole after punching a valet at a Hollywood nightclub.
He also had an assault and weapons conviction in 1992 and served five years for that crime.
Knight was accompanying rapper Tupac Shakur when he was killed in Las Vegas, Nevada, in September 1996.
The ceremony, which MTV will broadcast live, will include appearances by some of the entertainment world's biggest names.
