The Hague - British director Peter Greenaway is working on a film about Dutch 17th century master Rembrandt van Rijn, his Dutch producer told the ANP news agency.
Greenaway, who received an Oscar nomination for best foreign film in 1990 for The Cook, The Thief, His Wife and Her Lover, is writing the script for the movie which is to be called Nightwatching, producer Kees Kasander said.
The English-French-German-Dutch co-production will centre on the years when Rembrandt painted his most famous work "The Nightwatch". In that period the painter lost three children and his wife.
"The Nightwatch was the beginning of the end for Rembrandt. Not many people know the story," Kasander explained.
The film is to be finished in 2006, the official Rembrandt year marking the 400th anniversary of the painter's birth. Filming is scheduled to start this fall but no actors have been engaged.
