Los Angeles - Police front-man Sting has been named the worst lyricist in rock by Blender magazine for lyrics that exude "mountainous pomposity (and) cloying spirituality."
Sting, a former English teacher, was lambasted for quoting a Volvo bumper sticker in If You Love Someone Set Them Free, and also for borrowing from the words of Chaucer, St Augustine and Shakespeare.
Rush drummer Neil Peart was named at number two for writing "richly awful tapestries of fantasy and science."
Creed front-man Scott Stapp was at number three and Oasis guitarist Noel Gallagher was at number four for being "incapable of following a metaphor through a single line, let alone a whole verse."
Paul McCartney got the number 38 spot for his duet with Stevie Wonder, Ebony and Ivory, a song about racial harmony. - dpa
