Vung Tau - British glam rocker Gary Glitter, accused of having sex with underage girls, will be detained for four months in Vietnam pending further inquiries, an official said on Thursday.
The public security ministry has decided Glitter will be detained "for a period of four months", said Nguyen Duc Trinh, deputy head of the investigative police in the southern province of Ba Ria-Vung Tau.
Glitter was arrested on Saturday at Ho Chi Minh City airport as he tried to leave Vietnam for Thailand.
Police arrested Glitter after media reports in Britain last week that the performer, famed for outlandish outfits, was living with a 15-year-old girl. He has reportedly lived in Ba Ria-Vung Tau province since March this year.
Vietnamese state newspapers have said two girls, aged 12 and 13, had sex with Glitter several times and that he had paid them between 150 000 dong (less than $10) and 300*mnsp;000 dong each time.
Glitter, through his lawyer, has denied the allegations.
Paul Higham, British vice-consul in Ho Chi Minh City, met Glitter on Thursday in the Phuoc Co detention centre outside Vung Tau city.
