Pretoria - Two hijackers were caught in Pretoria on Friday night after a high-speed chase through the city that led to various accidents, damage of thousands of rands and two injured Tshwane metro police members being admitted to hospital.
Two men robbed Egandran Reddy from Wonderboompoort of his 4x4 at about 20:00.
He reported the incident to police and 30 minutes later the Sunnyside police spotted a vehicle in Paul Kruger Street that matched the description of Reddy's vehicle.
According to police spokesperson Percy Morokane the vehicle sped off when the police signalled the driver to pull over.
"It was the beginning of a kilometre of absolute chaos. At the corner of Proes and Schubart streets, the men crashed into a metro-police vehicle, which in turn crashed into a minibus-taxi.
The metro police officers were admitted to the Medforum Hospital."
The men fled, but before they could turn into DF Malan Street, they drove into the back of a Mazda 323.
They edged the Mazda out of the way, but were trumped when they tried to do the same with a Mercedes Benz.
"The 4x4 hit the Merc, overturned and rolled.
"I don't know if it was an advertisement for Mercedes, but the only car that could stop the men, was a Merc. And no-one in that vehicle was injured," Morokane said.
The men were arrested and are facing various charges, amongst which armed robbery ... and a range of traffic violations.
