Naked praise for SA school food

London - Meals at schools in Johannesburg townships are healthier than those at any British school, wrote world-famous chef Jamie Oliver in a political magazine.
Oliver had recently visited Soweto for his TV programme, Jamie's School Dinners and believes if people from poor communities can eat healthily, the British have no excuse.
He wrote in the latest edition of The House magazine: "The love and care that goes into children's meals there are better than in London. And it always provides for a balanced lunch."
Oliver also went for the British government's throat that, even after big newspaper headlines, they had not improved school meals locally.
Earlier, he had convinced Prime Minister Tony Blair to grant £280m (more than R3bn) to improve school meals.
Regarding his Gauteng visit, Oliver wrote that the freshest ingredients were used for these meals.
A typical school meal in Soweto was, according to him, lamb stew with fresh herbs, carrots, and cabbage and fresh fruit.
Children in Britain, apparently, have to eat chicken pieces or lasagne with chips and baked beans daily. Dessert usually consists of jam sponge cake with custard.
