Sydney - Star of the smash-hit series of Harry Potter films Daniel Radcliffe has signed to play an orphan in an Australian film called December Boys to go into production in and around Adelaide by the end of the year, news reports on Wednesday said.
The feature will be Radcliffe's first film role outside the Harry Potter franchise, producer Richard Becker told Australia's AAP news agency.
Radcliffe, 15, shot to international fame with the success of the first adaptation of author JK Rowling's Harry Potter seven-book series. Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone came out in 2001.
"Daniel is an actor with talent and intelligence beyond his years," Becker said. "He can step into any role and deliver a brilliant performance."
December Boys follows the adventures of four adolescent orphans born in the same month and who compete to be adopted by a young couple.
"We are thrilled that Daniel has chosen it as his next starring vehicle and are eager to commence production," Becker said.
The film will be directed by Rod Hardy, whose film credits include Robinson Crusoe and Buffalo Girls.
The last two Harry Potter films Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets and Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban both did well at the box office.
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire is currently in post-production. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix will be released in 2007. - Sapa-dpa
