Cape Town - The Baxter Theatre centre apologised on Wednesday for any inconvenience caused when a chicken was slaughtered on stage in the Brett Bailey play, iMumbo Jumbo.
Mannie Manin, director of the centre, said the slaughter did not take place in any of the previous shows at the centre.
"Bailey also did not inform me that the ritual slaughter would take place during the last show. We are taking the necessary steps to ensure that a similar incident does not take place in future," Manin said.
Slaughtering the chicken by cutting off its head caused an uproar among theatre-goers this week. Several members of the audience stormed out of the theatre shortly after the chicken was killed.
Participants in the play said they would not apologise because they are real sangomas and "it fitted the spirit of the ceremony".
The SPCA received at least two formal complaints.
