Hofmeyr 'is dood'?

On Friday I received one of those uninvited bulk SMSs stating that Steve Hofmeyr had passed away. It took a while before the bells started ringing. To me it was just another promo, or in this case, "no-more" SMS until I realised this was Steve Hofmeyr we're stalking about, sorry I meant to say talking about.
The singer that walked away with the Best Selling South African Artist of the Year music award in 2004; the singer that you'll often encounter at various boere musiek festivals or even rugby stadiums and the singer that has been beating up journalists of late.
The SMS further revealed that Steve Hofmeyr had "finally" succumbed to his perforated colon problems. I didn't even know colons could be perforated and - even worse - lead to death. It's a colon for chrissake! This was all too gripping and believable (since Hofmeyr was reported to have almost died had his wife not taken him to hospital on time last week).
I could already imagine die boere communities, Hofmeyr fans included, gathering and ambulating around the old South African flag whilst chanting Bok van Blerk's De La Rey, De La Rey and trying to find out who has a copy of Hofmeyr's latest CD, Waarmaker, so they could at least play the appropriate music at this rather morbid get-together.
Others would be cuddled around skinnering about his recent alleged infidelities and out-of-wedlock offspring. The atmosphere would be one of immense intensity as the journalists that brought all these "lies" stood watching over, taking notes and filming these morbid memorial proceedings.
A marketing ploy?
Anything could happen. Hofmeyr fans could easily attack journalists for causing Hofmeyr's stress and perforated colon. Music stores would be flooded with fans, flocking to buy Hofmeyr music.
But wait. As usual I smell a rat. I hardly remember Waarmaker (doesn't this name mean truth maker?) making any music headlines. Could all of this have been a marketing ploy to dig into people's emotions and make them run to stores in search of "liewe Stevie se musiek"?
Steve Hofmeyr is still alive and kicking and is being pampered silly by his wife at home. If anything died, it has to be his music career and such Steve-Hofmeyr-is-dead SMSs are just not the way to market your latest album or get some emotion-evoking publicity. Whoever concocted these SMSs is one sick, sick person and I don't appreciate such info.
Go to messages. Go to inbox. Find Hofmeyr SMS. Hit delete. And I'm done.
