Johannesburg - A lavish party for each day of the weekend. That’s exactly how socialite Khanyi Mbau celebrated her 25th birthday this weekend.
Mbau set tongues wagging again when guests invited to the exclusive bashes asked who could have afforded to foot the bill for her extravagant celebration.
Her manager, Linda Moeketsi, insisted that Mbau and her management company paid the bills.
The first party – with a gold theme – was held at The Bank, a posh club in Rosebank. Gold Oscar statuettes lined the red carpet leading to the venue on Friday night.
The controversial socialite – who shares a birthday with other well-known local celebs DJ Fresh and Nonhle Thema – arrived fashionably late.
The dress
Mbau was dressed in yet another questionable Jeff International creation, an almost-dress that was a leotard in the front, with a cascading gold tail at the back.
Although the party started off on a slow note, especially considering the socialite’s popularity, it soon picked up with many familiar faces showing up to party alongside Mbau.
President Jacob Zuma’s man Zizi Kodwa arrived with his entourage, the Kwela Tebza brothers looked like part in their fitted suits, and Amstel of gay group 3Sum was rolling solo (which seems to be the case these days).
Nowhere to be seen, and with good reason - that little restraining order issue - was Theunis Crous, Mbau’s most recent sugar daddy.
Also missing on the dance floor was Julius Malema, who was allegedly supposed to attend.
'Strictly swimwear'
There were also fewer BEE types than was expected. The crowd was kept on the dance floor by DJs Lulo Cafe, Sbu, Dimples and Vigilante.
An expected sight was the copious amount of champagne consumed by the glam set, but a more unusual sight was Mbau’s bouts of restraint when she sat on her golden chair in the corner looking rather tired.
Saturday saw Mbau celebrate at a private mansion in Fourways with close friends and celebrities.
Also present were all the BEEs in “construction” who were missing from the Friday night party.
The party had all the ingredients for a relaxed afternoon: champagne, masseuses and good music.
A “strictly swimwear” party was planned for Sunday at Ray Ray’s in Mamelodi, Pretoria.
