Johannesburg - Nelson Mandela on Thursday appointed Hollywood actor and rap music artist Will Smith global ambassador for his "46664" Aids awareness campaign.
Smith, who was in the country to promote his latest film "I, Robot", a science-fiction thriller, said he was honoured and would "humbly" and "aggressively" respond to the former president's request.
Smith who was accompanied by his wife, actress Jada Pinkett-Smith and their two children, met Mandela four years ago and sought advice from the charismatic leader who turned 86 in July.
He has been quoted as saying: "I get a good vibe whenever I'm in South Africa.
"I remember the first time I sat down with Madiba.
"He made me understand the power of what I do and the platform I have been given to inspire people with my movies."
Mandela launched his global "46664" campaign last October to raise awareness and funds for people with the deadly disease.
Some of the biggest names in international entertainment circles have backed it.
