Johannesburg - Soul City actor, Patrick "Kid" Mokoena, was shot dead in a bar in Jeppe in the early hours of Sunday morning, in what appeared to have been a targeted killing.

The actor and businessman, who played the role of "Thulasizwe", a taxi driver, on the current Soul City Series had stepped out of the Why Not Bar to answer a call, according to police spokesperson, Sefako Xaba.

Witnesses said when he returned to the bar, four armed men walked in and shot Mokoena four times: twice in his stomach and twice in his head.

He died instantly.

"After he was shot one of the robbers jumped over the counter and robbed the place of an undisclosed amount of cash," said Xaba.

'They targeted him'

The men fled the bar and police have yet to make any arrests.

Nobody else was hurt or shot at during the shooting. "It looks like they only targeted him," said Xaba.

Mokoena was also the chief executive of a music label called Why Not Entertainment.

According to reports in the Sowetan, Mokoena was embroiled in a war of words earlier this year with Ukhozi FM's Linda Sibiya, claiming the DJ owed him R20 000.

The father of five also had a fleet of 14 minibuses and his label produced the Durban group, Beat Nutz.

Soul City series manager, Dr William Mapham expressed his grief at Mokoena's death. "He will be sadly missed by the Soul City family," said Mapham.

"I met Kid during the production of the series and I still have his business card in my wallet. It says: 'We do it with passion'. He was passionate about his role as 'Thulasizwe' and always looked for ways to contribute to the greater team effort."

The Soul City Institute is a multi-media health promotion and social change project working through drama and entertainment.

Police have opened a murder investigation docket.
