Johannesburg - The Vuka! Awards were held at the Bassline on Wednesday and the winners represent some of the local film industry's creative talents.
The Vuka! Awards serve as a platform to reward and nurture SA filmmaking talent while providing exposure to social causes and charities via Public Service Announcements (PSAs).
Conflict Diamonds walked away with Best Overall PSA in the Professional category. It is produced by Young & Rubicam and is a hard-hitting film that illustrates the human cost of the underground diamond trade.
The film, directed by Grant de Souza, garnered five awards: Best Overall, Best Concept, Best Cinematography, Best Sound Design / Original Music and Best Editing - and was also inducted into the Hall of Fame.
Anton Visser's 21st Birthday picked up awards for Best Direction and Best Script. It tells the story of the effects of alcoholism on everyday life, and is part of a three-part series, including Sports Day and Roadblock.
In the Contender category, for filmmakers not yet established in the industry, It’s Getting Hot In Here, directed by Jonty Fine, won Best Overall Winner. The film takes a humorous look at the topic of global warming. It also won awards for Best Concept and Best Use of Humour.
The Best Cinematography award went to Silent Killer, directed by Grant Paul Roy.
Moses dominated the Newcomer category, which is for student filmmakers.
Moses six of the nine awards in this category, including Best Overall, Best Direction, Best Script, Best Cinematography, Best Sound Design / Original Music and Best Editing. The movie illustrates the cause of unwanted children through the use of biblical references and was directed by Alan Shelley.
The Last Piece won Best Concept, A Home for Every Heart won Best Animation and An Empty Conversation earned a special mention in the Best Use of Humour category.
Vuka! Awards organiser M-Net said that there were more than 100 entries for the awards.
