Johannesburg - Three farmers accused of the attempted murder of a suspected rhino poacher, were granted bail in the Phalaborwa Magistrate's Court on Thursday, police said.

"The men were each granted R3 000 bail and will return to court in June," said police spokesperson Ronel Otto.

"The case stems from an incident which took place on a farm in Gravelotte on Wednesday, when police received information that a suspected rhino poacher with rhino horns was arrested on a farm."

Otto said police went to the scene and found the three standing next to an open van with a man tied up in it.

"Both his legs and arms were tied and he had a serious open wound on top of his head."

The three men allegedly told police the man was a suspected rhino poacher and that they had apprehended him.

"Upon investigation by the police, no rhino horn nor any carcass of dead rhino were found on the farm as was alleged by the three suspects. No instruments used to shoot and dehorn rhino were found in his possession," Otto said.

Arrests

The three were arrested on the spot and charged with attempted murder.

"A case of trespassing was opened against the injured man, who is a local resident. He was transported to Maphutha Hospital in the Namakgale area, where he is still being treated. Police investigations continue," Otto said.

The three would appear in the Gravelotte Periodical Court on 19 June.
