Cape Town - A locally developed app that allows users to highlight wildlife has won a travel application contest.

The Africa App Quest competition saw entries from Africa and Africa Live was awarded with a $10 000 prize.

"We created Africa Live as we saw a strong need in the market place for a platform for people to share their wildlife sightings instantly," said Rob Maclean, managing director of Africa Live creator Satpack Travel.

The app allows users travelling through game reserves to mark the locations of wildlife.

Suspicious activity like poaching can also be highlighted in a bid to alert the authorities to where poachers might be operating.

Poaching of rhino is SA remains at alarming levels.

According to the latest figured provided by the department of environmental affairs, 618 rhino have been poached in SA this year, up from 668 for 2012.

The Kruger National park remains a poaching hotbed with 381 rhino poached in the cross border park alone.

The Africa Live app promotes local tourism and it has been downloaded around 22 000 times with 14 000 sightings added to the database.
