Buenos Aires - Mayor Mauricio Macri has reached a milestone in his campaign to make Buenos Aires a bike-friendly capital: 100km of dedicated bike lanes and paths.

Macri dutifully wore a helmet and made sure that most of his Cabinet did so as well as they announced the achievement on Wednesday during a short ride in the upscale Palermo neighbourhood.

The mayor said that by year's end, the city will have another 30km of bike lanes and 100 stations where residents can rent the city's signature yellow bikes for free.

Meanwhile, Banco Ciudad is expanding a programme that has enabled 14 000 people so far to buy bikes with zero-interest loans.
