Cape Town - Western Cape conservation agency CapeNature will get just over half the province's annual environmental affairs and developmental planning budget, the Cape Argus reported on Tuesday.

In his budget speech for 2013/14, MEC Anton Bredell said the agency would be allocated R223m of the R421m annual budget.

Bredell said the National Development Plan had made it clear the maintenance of "ecosystem services" was fundamental to achieving the country's socio-economic objectives.

CapeNature is responsible for conserving the ecosystems that provide most of the province's water.

Teams had cleared 24 130ha of invasive alien vegetation and done another 113 506ha of follow-up clearing, while R186m had been allocated to this programme over the next three financial years.

According to the report, more than R3m had been allocated to fire management over the same period.

"This allocation does not address the true gravity of fire management. There is no certainty to the expected cost implications of each wildfire," Bredell said.

"We owe our gratitude to the men and women who fight [fires] on our behalf".
