Chimp birth streamed live

2013-01-24 10:43

The world's first live chimpanzee birth was screened from the Jane Goodall Institute, South Africa on Wednesday. Watch as nine-year-old chimp Nina gives birth.WATCH

Cape Town – The baby that was born to the online celebrity chimp, Nina, will only be named after 30 days, the Jane Goodall Institute’s director said.

IOL reported that even though the baby was doing well things could still go wrong and the institute wanted to focus firstly on the baby’s well-being and later the name.

Facebook was abuzz with comments and one user had already suggested that the baby be called “webcam”, Timeslive reported.

Public relations consultant, Martina Nicholson, said the institute wants to give the newborn an African name.

Rescued chimps from West Africa are commonly given French names.

Nina, along with four other chimps, was rescued in South Sudan six years ago. Hunters had captured her for bush-meat.

The institute has a very strict non-breeding policy and was surprised to discover that Nina was pregnant, a result of failed birth control.

A non-invasive camera was placed in the chimp's enclosure to provide live video streaming 24 hours a day.

The pregnancy and birth of Nina’s baby has created much needed awareness around the plight of endangered chimps which are often hunted for bush-meat in central African countries.

Nina is the first chimpanzee to have given birth in a live online broadcast to over 600 000 viewers.

The public will be granted the opportunity to participate in choosing the name.
