Doha - A UN climate conference with nearly 200 countries has adopted an extension of the Kyoto Protocol through 2020.

The 1997 pact, which controls the greenhouse gas emissions of rich countries, expires this year.

Negotiators haggled through the night in Doha to finalize details of a deal that allowed Kyoto to live on for another commitment period.

However, the second phase only covers about 15% of global emissions after Canada, Japan, New Zealand and Russia opted out.

The US never joined Kyoto, partly because it didn't include China and other fast-growing developing countries.

Countries aim to adopt in 2015 a wider treaty that would apply to all countries and enter force when the Kyoto extension expires.

Douglas Hollis says... I can't say. I'd surmise that most of it would be above sea level. Esp given that the glaciers not too close to the polar regions would have to be at fairly high altitude for sustained subzero temperatures, eg in the Alps, the Andes and Himalayas. You may argue that not all of the glacial meltwater would ever make it to the oceans, but remember as it evaporates it's effectively gonna find it's way back there sometime, while it also creates a substantial problem for the local villages that have depended on the seasonal meltwater for drinking water and irrigation for hundreds, if not thousands of years. Either way, the prognosis is that the planet is heating up, and especially in the polar regions. The surface area lost by the Arctic, for instance, during only the summer of 2012, was larger than Alaska and Canada combined. It has decreased by 45% relative to the average summer extent of the 80's and 90's. That's definitely pointing to a warming planet, and one which will hold uncertain consequences for us.
