Johannesburg - Environmental Affairs Minister Edna Molewa has gazetted the National Dust Control Regulations, her department said on Friday.

"The purpose of the regulations is to prescribe general measures for the control of dust in all areas," the department said in a statement.

"Any person who conducts any activity in such a way as to give rise to dust in quantities and concentrations that may exceed the dustfall standard set out... must, upon receipt of a notice from an air quality officer, implement a dustfall monitoring programmes."

The regulations were in terms of the National Environmental Management: Air Quality Act.

The department said according to the regulations an air quality officer could ask anyone to undertake a dustfall monitoring programme if it was suspected the person contravened the regulations.

The individual would then need to submit a dustfall monitoring report to the air quality officer within a certain period of time.
