Cape Town - Two large earthquakes have struck in the so-called Ring of Fire, but there have been no reports of tsunamis or injuries.

On Monday, a large earthquake measuring 6 on the Richter scale struck off Namie, northeast Japan.

The area is close to the Fukushima prefecture, which was hit by a quake in March 2011 and resulted in a nuclear accident.

The head of the International Atomic Energy Agency team, Juan Carlos Lentijo, said recently that it was unknown how long the clean-up for the area may take.

A second large earthquake struck off Aisen on the coast of Chile.

It measured 6.8 on the Richter scale and was only 10km down, as opposed to the Japanese quake which was 34.3km in depth.

Both quakes are on the Ring of Fire around the Pacific Ocean where a large number of earthquakes occur.
