Cape Town - A court in the US has awarded a family $2.9m after their water and air was polluted by a oil company for their fracking initiatives.

According to a report on the Huffington Post their lawyer said the family’s victory was a historic moment in the fracking debate.

The couple in 2011, Bob and Lisa Parr sued the Aruba Petroleum company for making them sick.

The couple argued that the company’s fracking at their 22 sites near the family’s home caused nose bleeds and skin irritations.

At certain times the couple’s daughter would wake up in the middle of the night covered in blood.

The company is planning to appeal the decision.

The judgment was broken down as follows:

$275 000 for a loss in property value.

$2m for pain and suffering.

$250 000 for potential pain and suffering in the future.

$400 000 for mental anguish.
