Cape Town – Four days after a fire took flame in the Bain’s Kloof Pass, a large tract of fynbos lay scorched as fire-fighters battle to keep the blaze under control.

Die Burger reports that 270ha of mainly fynbos has been ravaged by a fire which was allegedly started on Friday morning by a hitchhiker.

It is believed that the hitchhiker may have started the fire for heat after which it got out of control and moved towards the Groenberg Mountains.

In an earlier report fynbos researcher, Paul Emms, told News24 that the vegetation tends to accumulate dead material which makes it easily combustible.

Cape Times spoke to Cape Winelands District Municipality interim manager, Jaco Thuysma, who said nobody has been harmed but that 14 farms are at risk

The farms include Rooshoek, Foxenburg, Boplaas, Kruishof, Welbedacht, Vondeling, Klein Vondeling, Woestkloof, Langkloof, Wolwehoek, Slangrivier, Doolhof, Linhof, and Oaklands.

Thuysma and his team have been logging 12-hour shifts and are hoping for cooler weather overnight, predicting that the blaze will be contained in the morning.
