Hanoi -  Three female Asian elephants from Hanoi Zoo were left to wander in a grassy enclosure on Wednesday after years of being chained up.

The elephants had spent the vast majority of their lives in narrow cages or constricted by 1m chains attached to their ankles, leaving their legs scarred, animal rights group Animals Asia said.

"Three elephants now can live in an area of more than 1 000m² and they are not being confined by chains as before," Nguyen Van Hung, director of Hanoi Zoo, told dpa.

"They can enjoy more freedom to move now."

The zoo in the Vietnamese capital has been criticised for the poor condition of its caged animals, often due to tight budgets and a lack of qualified staff.

Animals Asia, Change for Animals Foundation, and Wild Welfare has been working with Hanoi Zoo since 2013 to help improve enclosures and train staff.
