Cape Town – Residents residing in the Germiston area woke up to tremors early on Wednesday morning which had many thinking that it was an earthquake.

Germiston resident, Kim Fourie, contacted News24 saying: “I felt an earth tremor this morning. It was hectic! My windows were rattling and everything was shaking. I also heard a loud rumble”.

Fourie said the tremors started at 00:30 on Wednesday morning.

Twitter users including South African singer, Danny K, tweeted about the incident.

Under the Twitter handle, @dannykmusic the singer tweeted: “I think I just felt an earthquake in Johannesburg.”

Another user, @RS4MIND, tweeted: “I can’t sleep now...earthquake in Germiston”.

The Quake feed iPhone application, which sources its information from the US Geological Survey, shows no significant earthquake activity in the southern African region.

The application maps earthquakes worldwide in real-time and provides Richter scale magnitudes for events.

The director of communication for disaster management for the Ekurhuleni Metro Municipality, Tsakani Baloyi, said that the metro is aware of the tremor but is still waiting for information on the cause.
