Mbombela - A suspected poacher who managed to escape arrest in the Kruger National Park has been found wounded, Mpumalanga police said on Thursday.

He was arrested on Wednesday morning and taken to hospital, where a second suspected poacher was being treated, spokesperson Warrant Officer Oubaas Coetzer said.

Three men encountered police and rangers at Pretoriuskop in the Kruger National Park on Tuesday. Two were wounded when a shoot-out ensued. One of the men escaped, and the other two were arrested.

They were found in possession of a .458 rifle fitted with a silencer, ammunition, an axe, and a knife.

The third man, Derick Masinga, 28, appeared briefly in the White River Magistrate's Court on Thursday. The matter was postponed to Wednesday.

If the injured men were released from hospital before then they would appear along with Masinga, Coetzer said.

All three had been arrested for possession of an illegal firearm and ammunition, and trespassing in the Kruger National Park.

Police believed the rifle could be linked to poaching in the area.
