Illegal ivory shipment seized

2013-07-04 13:30

Police seized a container marked as "sundried fish" in Kenya; the container actually contained a "major find" of illegal ivory. Watch.WATCH

Mombasa - Officials at Kenya's Mombasa port say they have seized a consignment of illegal ivory disguised as peanuts for export to Malaysia.

Paul Mbugua, a spokesperson for the Kenya Wildlife Service, said on Tuesday that the ivory was seized on Monday, the second such seizure in less than a week. Revenue officials in Mombasa last week seized a substantial consignment of illegal ivory disguised as sundried fish marked for export to Malaysia.

Mbugua said the more than three tons of ivory seized had been declared as 240 bags of peanuts.

East African countries face a growing problem of poaching and illegal ivory trading, as the demand for ivory increases in Asia. According to Cites, the international body that monitors endangered species, the illegal ivory trade has more than doubled since 2007.
