Mbombela - Kruger National Park rangers have received 500 Christmas hampers worth R620 000.

The donation, handed over in Skukuza on Thursday, came from the SANParks Honorary Rangers and Imperial Retail Logistics.

“We decided to contribute by donating food hampers to the families of those who work so passionately, especially the Kruger rangers," said Imperial Commercial Director Friedel Spies.

He saluted those who are making a difference in the conservation and protection of South Africa's rhino population.

He said a team from the company spent time with the rangers in August and learnt just how tough their jobs are.

General Johan Jooste, who is in charge of special projects in the Kruger, most notably the fight against rhino poaching, said the donation was a good incentive for the rangers "during these very difficult times".

The Kruger is divided into 22 ranger sections, each section managed by a section ranger who is assisted by an average of 20 field rangers.
