Cape Town - An application designed to aggregate wildlife sightings in the Kruger Park has had a successful first three months, with over 10 000 downloads.

The Kruger Live app which was developed locally helps tourists spot elephant, lion and other animals by using location-based software.

Users can input the location of the animals and the information becomes available online on both the application and website platforms.

In addition to the location of animals, the app also allows users to upload images and a description of the sighting.

According to Rob Maclean, managing director for Kruger Live, the platform has resulted in around 100 sightings per day from about 6 000 visitors.

The platform may also be able to contribute to the reduction of poaching.

In 2012, over 600 rhino were poached in SA and the application gives users the ability to report suspicious behaviour in the game park that could be used to alert the authorities.

The free app is available for Android and iOS platforms, and will soon be available for BlackBerry in SA.
