Tbilisi - Tigers, lions, jaguars, bears and wolves escaped Sunday from flooded zoo enclosures in the Georgian capital Tbilisi, the mayor's office said.

Some of the animals were captured by police while others were shot dead, the mayor's office told local Rustavi 2 television.

At least eight people have drowned and several others are missing in the Georgian capital, the country’s interior minister said on Sunday.

An unnamed official quoted by the channel said the toll has since risen to nine.

Heavy rainfall turned the Vere River flowing through Tbilisi into a torrent that swept away dozens of buildings and cars.

"Dozens of families remain homeless as their houses were destroyed or damaged in the capital. There are some victims," vice mayor of Tbilisi Irakly Lekvinadze told reporters, adding that a preliminary estimate put damages at $10m.
